Wednesday, August 01, 2018 - The school girl whose photo went viral on social media recently has a reason to smile.

The 13-year old class five pupil was spotted hanging precariously on a motorbike that was ferrying firewood.

It later emerged that the girl, who hails from Marakwet County, stays with her grandmother.

She had walked for seven kilometers to help her grandmother gather firewood which she sells for their upkeep.

A kind Boda Boda rider offered to help her ferry the firewood and the girl decided to hitch a ride on top of the firewood.

Someone took the photo and it quickly went viral online.

Now, a city based NGO has come to her rescue and awarded her a full scholarship and other goodies to enable her focus on schooling.

The NGO, Soles for African Child, traced her to Chelles Primary School in Kapsowar Township and donated several pairs of shoes to her and her two siblings.
