MIKE SONKO cancels Chandarana Supermarket’s license after a racial discrimination incident but the supermarket remains open

Monday July 30, 2018 - Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, cancelled the licences of all Chandarana Foodplus supermarkets following claims of racial bias.

In a statement on Sunday evening, Sonko said he had ordered his County officers to ensure enforcement of the shutdown starting from Monday.

On Friday, a staff member in the Marketing Department of Chandarana Supermarket, which is owned by Indians, wrote an email that was racially sensitive.

In a screenshot of the email to managers, the retail giant’s Marketing Specialist, Rima Patel, said.

“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain, would like to give you free vouchers to winner/ raffles/ best performer/ runners-up candidate in upcoming events. As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets.”

The email generated a lot of backlash from Kenyans who vowed never to visit the supermarket again.

Meanwhile, Chandarana issued an apology for the perceived racially insensitive email, terming it as an error committed by “one of their very new and recent hires in the marketing department.”

“Her lack of proficiency in the English language is an easy way to justify this horrendous error.” The retail giant said in a statement on Sunday.

Its branches remain open despite Sonko’s order
