THABO MBEKI reveals the mistake which could have led to so many spoilt votes.

Wednesday, 09 August 2017- Thabo Mbeki, the head of the AU observer mission for Kenya’s election has explained why Kenya had so many spoilt votes on Tuesday's General Election.

According to IEBC's website, over 36o,000 presidential votes were rejected.

The former South African president says the electoral body would disqualify any vote which was ticked outside the box.

Mbeki explained that if 95% of the tick was in the box while 5% was outside, it was declared null and void vote, which could explain the high number of rejected votes.

He asserted that all stakeholders in the election process needed to agree on ground rules of rejecting a vote.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday at the Bomas of Kenya, the National Tallying Centre Mbeki also lauded IEBC for a job well done.

Provisional results show President Uhuru Kenyatta leading with 7,711,454 votes against Raila Odinga's 6,524,426 votes although the opposition leader has termed the election a fraud claiming IEBC systems were hacked.
