Police officer ROUGHED UP by hawkers in a demonstration in Nairobi

Monday 16th September 2013 - A police officer is nursing injuries after he was attacked on Monday morning and his motorbike torched by a group of hawkers at the Globe Cinema roundabout in Nairobi.

The traffic officer was manning the roundabout when the traders, who were protesting the killing of their colleague last week by police, attacked him.

According to witnesses, the traders had been violently dispersed from outside Central Police Station where they were demonstrating and were escaping when they met with the officer. They attacked him inflicting serious head and facial injuries.

They clobbered him with others hitting him with stones before burning his motorbike and escaping.

The hawkers had marched to the police station to air their grievances and demand an explanation when they were dispersed by anti-riot officers who lobbed teargas canisters at them.

It was while running that they met the constable few meters away and attacked him.
