Wednesday September 18, 2013 - Panic and anxiety gripped the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday, after a key witness in the case facing Deputy President William Ruto and radio presenter, Joshua Sang, recanted her entire statement and asked to withdraw from the proceedings.
Speaking on Tuesday through a phone, the witness who was expected to testify this week trial against Ruto said she no longer wished to give evidence because Kenya was now at peace.
She also said that former warring communities had put behind the ‘ugly past’ and forged a united front.
“My client has no wish to re-open healed wounds and is keen to be part of ongoing peace building efforts in the country,” the witness’ lawyer Frank Mwangi told ICC in a written statement.
“She feels a lot has changed for the better and there is peace everywhere with the communities looking for ways to make the reconciliation being enjoyed permanent,” the statement added.
She said she was even approached by an emissary from the ICC last week and was advised to prepare to travel to Netherlands on Monday evening.
The witness said the emissary handed over all her travel and other necessary documents but her conscience told her not to go to The Hague and peddle lies.
She said she will not be among “betrayers” who are selling the country’s sovereignty in foreign land, adding that the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities together are helping one another to rebuild their lives which they destroyed during 2007-08 post election violence.
