Senior Government Official in the transition team officer SHOT DEAD in Nairobi

Monday, the 13th of May 2013 - Reports indicate that Eliud Wepukhulu Baraza, a senior officer with the Transitional Authority, was this morning shot dead outside his residence in Tena Estate while waiting for his driver to pick him up.

The 6:15 a.m shooting has been confirmed by Nairobi Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Benson Kibue. The PPO said that eyewitness reports indicate that Baraza had been confronted by three men driving a Toyota Fielder outside his home;

“Eye witnesses have told us that there was an argument before the attackers shot him. We are investigating to arrest the attackers and also establish the motive of the attack,” said Kibue.

The registration number of the attackers’ vehicle was not recorded.

Baraza, 58, was one of officials appointed to join the Transitional Authority in February. The Transitional Authority is under a constitutional mandate to facilitate the success of the devolved system of government.

Baraza was appointed as the coordinating officer. Others appointed at the time include Stephen Osiro (Chief Finance Officer), Philomena Nzuki (Accounting Officer), and Gideon Mainge (Sergeat at Arms).

The incident underlines the level of insecurity that is currently plaguing Nairobi. Baraza is said to have been working with the Nairobi Governor’s office to stump out the menace of carjacking.
