Press Statement from Deputy President WILLIAM RUTO’s office on the PRIVATE JET SAGA

HIS EXCELLENCY DEPUTY PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO’S TRIP TO WEST AFRICA

In his inaugural speech, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta laid emphasis on Kenya’s foreign policy, and the direction and priority the country was taking. Kenya was going to lay more emphasis in its dealings on security, political and economic issues with African nations.

Thus, the Head of State has committed his Government to a policy that promotes intra-Africa trade, contributing to regional stability, peace, security and economic wellbeing among the nations of the Continent.

It is against this background that President Kenyatta dispatched his Deputy President William Ruto not only to make this possible but also realize a necessity for Africa to get its act together. He is carrying out this brief that is not only limited to discussions on trade, political and economic avenues but also opening up new diplomatic contacts and frontiers.

In his first diplomatic engagement with various Heads of State in Africa, the Deputy President has been able to redefine our foreign policy, and secured, facilitated and created a lasting network for Kenya as far as economic, security and political issues are concerned. He has been to Congo Brazzaville, Gabon, Nigeria and Ghana where he met the respective Heads of State and shared with them Kenya’s vision. The Deputy President was able to discuss issues of the deployment of an African Rapid Deployment Force, which will be at the disposal of and funded by African Nations.

As we all know, there are hardly any scheduled or commercial connecting flights between the capitals the Deputy President and his delegation has visited. A Commercial flight would have cost more because it would entail circuitous and torturous trips to European capitals and back in just to pick up connecting flights. The Deputy President was very conscious of this fact. In fact, by chartering the flight, the Deputy President has been able to realize this at a very cost-effective means.

We thus find the lead story published in the Sunday Nation today, May 19, 2013 inaccurate, false, exaggerated, malicious, in bad faith and intended to pursue interests that are narrow, selfish and hardly beneficial to this nation. It is disturbing that the neither the Deputy President nor any of his officers was afforded an opportunity – as journalistic practice of fairness and partiality dictates – to give his side of the story ahead of its publishing.

The article has no scintilla of truth. It is a fabrication; a concoction. It is slanted with very obvious intentions. It is intended to bring disrepute to the person and the office of the Deputy President.

For the record, there is no contract of one-year lease between Kenya and VistaJet, as the story purports. The plane was hired on a one-off basis at a cost of KShs18.5 million. This figure is in fact less than that quoted by local companies, which was KShs19 million. Those interested can confirm this with the company.

According to official records of similar trips in the past it would have cost upto KShs15 million for a travel to a single country. If the Deputy President had used the traditional one trip at a time like his predecessors, it would have cost more and months to complete.

The facility was recommended on the basis of safety and security of the Deputy President as it was used before by the Government. Previously, the same facility was hired for a similar trip and cost KShs29 million.

The Deputy President was a state guest to the countries and did not therefore incur any other of the taxpayers’ funds.

  8. If all we want to do is to compare who between Raila and Ruto spent more on a jet, then Ruto is wrong DP. It doesn't matter whether his jet hire was cheaper than Raila's. And please there are commercial flights to all the destinations he went. Truth be told Ruto is not as smart as he talks. He still has the KANU leadership style; wakes up one morning (like Moi) and decides a state corporation cannot do this or that.

  9. The facts remain. The travel was not necessary - It puts no ugali to any any Kenyan`s plate. A waste of our taxes

  10. Why not use the prezos jet??

  11. It could have made a lot of sence to hire the local at the 19m rather pay all that sum to a foreigner - Why cause capital flight? What was your cut?

  12. u can take ur scandals to America thats where they thrive. We are tired of this corded scandals. Next time u bring one, be informed that the jubilee gava has a cord breaker...

  13. Prezzo's Jet, is not capable of those logistics. Fuel being the main challenge. it would have still cost more than the hired jet. I KNOW!

  14. theives...they stole elections, they have stolen land now they are stealing public money....uwiiiiii thieves.

  15. The flight was not necessary. He just wanted to go outing with his girl-friend - the one he nominated to senate. Since they claim they are digital why didnt he skype instead of wasting public money to finance his romantic outing.

  16. HE IS THE d.p so ?? n such a job comes with special privilleges.............ingekuwa wewe??? acheni wivu joh

  17. OH! MY DEAR DEPUTY PRESIDENT, RAO WAS SET EXACTLY THE SAME WAY YOU ARE BEING SET.THE GUY IS SITTING PRETTY AND CHARMING HIS WAY TO WANANCHIS HEARTS WHILE YOU ARE RUNNING AROUND THE COUNTRY AND OUTSIDE BUNNING YOUR ASS. ASK RAO YOU WILL BE THE FALL GUY. KICHAPO NI KILEKILE TU.

  18. This paper Nation thrives on propaganda;many years ago,it reported that a prominent Kenyan was in Zambia when his body was in a forest in Ngong area,Now this about a private jet hired for a whole year, shame on those nation reporters.
