UHURU/RUTO’s Government to establish SH10 BILLION sugar project in West Pokot.

Tuesday April 30, 2013 - President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Government has announced plans to establish a multi-billion sugarcane project in West Pokot-Turkana borders.

While confirming this, Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) Managing Director David Kimosop said that the 10-billion shillings project would be overseen by his Authority which has already contracted an Indian Company to undertake the project.

He noted that his authority had conducted a feasibility study on the soil and found it suitable for sugarcane production.

Kimosop urged Pokot and Turkana communities to embrace the project saying it would benefit the locals.

The project that sits on 40,000 acres of land will see the said land put under irrigation with water from Turkwel Dam thereby turning the dry region into an agricultural hub.

According to Kimosop, part of the sh10 billion will be used to construct a sugar factory and a nuclear power station to generate electricity.

  3. Stupid display, Kenya Government not Uhuru/Ruto govt. In any case that project has been going on for the last fifteen years and Ruto was Minister of Agriculture while Uhuru Finance why did not they complete then. Useless PR

  4. Lotion from Turkana.
The project seems to be exciting and well thought. But there's need to make some specifications as regards to exact location of the land to be used for the project i.e geographycal location covering the two counties to avoid chronic wrangles of land. You also must reckon that L. Turkana has had problems of its waters receding coz of damming in Ethiopia and now this other project will further reduce its capacity thus affecting lives of its inhabitants and ecosystem. Is this not going to be another recipe for disagreements between the two communities? Where is the Envirommental Impact Assesment report?
