There was NO VOTE DOCTORING at KENYATTA UNIVERSITY! - VC OLIVE MUGENDAPolitics 06:46
Saturday March 16, 2013 - Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Olive Mugenda has defended the ongoing debate on social media that Kenyatta University rooms were being used by the IEBC to doctor the results.
In a statement she sent to the press on Friday evening, the VC said the materials of the IEBC which were found in one of the rooms, were in the institution because KU was used as a tallying centre by the IEBC.
“IEBC hired the premises on February 22 up to March 15. I am informed IEBC was to clear the room today but word went around through social media that votes were being tallied there. The students reacted and demanded to know what IEBC staff were doing,” Prof Mugenda said.
Mugenda said she will apprehend the students who torched the IEBC car saying she will set a committee to probe the issue.
Mugenda’s remarks were also echoed by Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo who confirmed that the institution was used by electoral authorities.
A student by name Paul Ochieng said they became suspicious after noticing strange people entering and leaving a room that had been marked out of bounds.
The student informed Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba and Millie Odhiambo who went running to the institution.
Two IEBC vehicles were burnt to ashes as police engaged the students in running battles.
Later it was found that the materials which have been locked in the room were jackets, stamps, marker pens, ballot boxes, empty ballot papers for Presidential, Governor and Women Representative for Nairobi County.
