A MUST READ for all the LUO …… Please READ THIS!!!

By Onyango Oloo

The year 2007 was an election year in Kenya. Never before had there been such hope and aura of confidence amongst the Luo people.

One of our own was headed to State House. The air of excitement was comparable only to the year 1992, also an election year.

The 1992 election was a disappointment. Our only beacon of hope had not only failed to clinch the presidency, he had performed disastrously.

Outgunned and outpaced, Jaramogi was beaten to a poor fourth behind Daniel arap Moi, Kenneth Matiba and Mwai Kibaki. The Luo voted him to a man.

We had learnt our lessons and in 1997, the excitement was measured. Come 2002, we were happy, we had avenged Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s defeat by voting a winning candidate; but he was not one of us.

Come 2007, Raila Odinga had rallied the support of the populous Rift Valley Province and was faring well in opinion polls against the incumbent Kibaki. We were sure to win; areas that had hitherto not voted with the Luos had shown they were willing to do business.

Nothing could stop our grand march to State House. Then something went wrong, the numbers just failed to add up. Kibaki won. Raila refused to accept defeat, refused to go to court, setting the country aflame. The rest is history.

Once again Raila is making a stab at the presidency and the Luo are being rallied to vote one of their own. Anybody of contra opinion or dares oppose the tribe’s candidate is a traitor. This is our time, our hope and our dream. Our only chance to throw out the yoke of poverty and start the march to prosperity and opulence.

We are also told, the march will not commence until and unless we win the presidency, and we shall only commence this march upon Raila, and not Onyango Oloo, Raphael Tuju or James Orengo winning the presidency. Any other win is fake and not truly Luo. Or so we hear.

Fate is sealed

Until recently, nothing was stopping ‘Agwambo’ from winning the coveted trophy. After all, two of the leading presidential candidates Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto had been entangled with the International Criminal Court (ICC). Their fate was sealed.

Kalonzo Musyoka was considered weak against Raila’s campaign juggernaut. Then again, something went wrong, very wrong. The ICC confirmed that nothing, not even the confirmation of the charges against the two would bar them from the contest. Coupled with Raila’s steady descent in opinion polls, the numbers may just refuse to add up yet again as they did in 2007 and 1992.

It is thus imperative that the Luo start thinking and voting like the rest of Kenyans. No one has exclusivity, save for messianic descent, to save the community from its economic and social afflictions.

In 1992, the Kikuyu had both Matiba and Kibaki. In 2002 they had Kibaki and Uhuru and come next year they already have not less than five candidates from different parties.

The rest of the country has several candidates. They are at peace with their campaigns, except in Luoland where hooligans break up meet-the-people tours.

I say, Luo Nyanza has slightly over one million votes against Gema’s estimated voting strength of 4.5 million votes, the Kalenjin and Kamba had slightly over a million votes each, the Kisii about 600,000, and Luhyas above 1.4 million among others.

A Raila presidency could as well be a pipe dream. This added to the fact that the Constitution requires 50 per cent plus one vote to clinch the presidency in the first round, failing which the best two would compete in a simple majority basis.

And what if Raila does not hack it then?

It is high time the Luo integrate politically with the rest of Kenya. In other words a Raila, Uhuru or Ruto presidency should have the Luo as senior members of their administration. But nobody will appoint you to high political office if you do not support their political cause. But that’s a fallacy.

Hedging our bets

Consider this. Other Kenyan communities are already strategically placed should Raila, Uhuru, Ruto or Kalonzo win. For the Kikuyu, the likes of Peter Kuguru, Njenga Karume, Joe Wanjui, and Stanley Githunguri are watching brief in Raila’s camp. The rest remain with Uhuru. Luos are stacked with 'Agwambo'. What if he fails as he has done before?

Why aren’t we hedging our bets and allow some to walk with Uhuru, others with Ruto, others Kalonzo, as the rest of Kenyans are?

Let all men be in the know. We have to work hard and integrate with the rest of Kenyans. Let no one associate our poverty and misery with Luo inability to win the presidency. If that be the case, are the Luhya , the Meru, Kisii, Maasai, or Swahili, faring worse, just because they have not held the presidency?

And can somebody explain the whereabouts of the famed half loaf of 2008?

  2. Mr. Onyango, think twice b4 you put that u a pen on a ps of paper. At this particular point in time what, KE needs is ps and healing of what happened after 07 election not to open the healing wounds. There is a blinding curtain b4 u a eyes, need to see beyond the horizon. You are condemning innocent pple who perfected their democratic right by voting their choice. Remember, nobody knows who won the elections as suggested by an intensive report by experts from all over the world, the Krigler, he challenged anyone to offer an alternative. No one has ever did so to prove that Kibaki won the election as you appear to indicate. Be a patriotic kenyan.

  7. Gentleman, Who said Luos are poor? You must have missed the concept. Stop misdirecting us. remember the quote: Blood is denser than water. Why would the GEMA not vote outside their Territory. Do you read the bible? Remember the tale of Israelites on way to Cannan, they outmaneuvered all the powerful and numerically superior communities be4 concuring Cannan. Luos were blessed by God.

  10. Onyango Oloo knows where his bread is buttered. He must have been too young in 2002 when all Kenyans voted for Mwai Kibaki. He should flop that question the other side and ask, why can't the people of Mt. Kenya vote outside their region? He must also know that although Raila's support in Nyanza is unquestionable, his following in the rest of the country is equally massive. There are millions of non-Luos who believe in him and are ready to defend him. Oloo has a right to defend his party but he has no right to reduce RAO's presidency to a Luo affair. Those of us who support him do so out of a conviction that he is the only one who represents real change. The rest of the pack are status quo and cerelac babies.

  11. Oloo must have been too young in 2002 to see how Luos and other Kenyans overwhelmingly voted to Mwai Kibaki. He should flip his question the other side and ask, why must the people of Central Kenya always vote for their own? Can he give an instance when they have voted otherwise. Why do they believe that the Presidency is their god-given right? Is it because of numbers? Those of us who support Raila and are not Luo, do so out of conviction that Kenya is big enough for all the tribes but it is not big enough for the greed of two tribes. We believe that Raila represents our aspirations more than any other presidential candidate. He knows his masters and he must play his game quietly without offending the sensibilities of those who don't subscribe to his line of thinking. After all he knows which side of his bread is buttered.

  15. What a lousy article! When was it written. It is outdated to begin with: "Consider this. Other Kenyan communities are already strategically placed should Raila, Uhuru, Ruto or Kalonzo win."

That 2007 election was as insane as a referee who picks a ball whistles to nullify a goal on one end of the pitch and instead runs across the filed to the opposite end of the pitch and points to the penalty spot.

  18. A good advice but us usual shall be denied by Agwambo worshipers, @ Martin Ptoch, Rao never wanted to vote nor campaign for Kibaki tosha in 2002, their was a memorandum of understanding which took Raila 3 days sign, the makers of MOU put a lot of conditions where by others were not acceptable because of the then constitution! We are not fools to accept that Raila really would have said tosha without CONDITIONS in MOU! If that is the case then, why cant he now say Ruto tosha or Balala tosha or Mudavadi tosha, these are the guys who gave all in favor of Agwambo in 2007, why not them at least for now? Why Raila and not Ruto, Balala or MM??

  20. Boss I am not a Luo but I have always been a supporter of Raila. Many young people support Raila because they can relate with him. The current issues facing Kenya can be be best solve under a Raila presidency. Land issues which have been the Achilles of the Kenyan political and social set up can not be addressed by people who benefited in the KANU regimes of Kenyatta and Moi. Let us stop propagating the seeds of discord based on tribalism and vote for the future of this country; I believe that Raila is the foundation of the future.

  21. This man Oloo is a genius. He is not asking for his personal gain. His reasoning is based on facts. No candindate can win presidency without the backing of GEMA and Kalenjin nation. The figures provided by IEBC do not favour CORD alliance. Not even WIPER'S miracles will help the situation.Come 2013 RAO will be an opposition leader

  22. You know very well that Oloo is at work so if he doesnt do this then there is no salary for him. I think in my opinion lets live this guy do his work

  23. Those attacking Oloo should carefully read and re-read his words. 1st of all Luo Nyanza should have more candidates and not just Raila (and his family). 2nd prosperity is not brought by being on the right side of politics but by sheer hard work. Kikuyus were marginalized by the Moi government for 24 years but their children remained in school in Kenya and overseas. Finally Raila's "Kibaki Tosha" slogan came after the Kibaki, Saitoti, Wamalwa, Ngilu etc. deal had already been sealed and headed for success. He was no king-maker.

  27. Raila has been Prime minister for the last 5 years. There are no radical transformations he has brought about in Kenya for us to believe that he is a reformer. True, he was not always able to do as he might have wished, but still he had opportunity. Mahatma Gandhi made a big impact in India without having the benefit of a government position. What Onyango Oloo is advocating is not to be a blind follower. Blind followers do not calculate or look at hard facts that are clear for every one to see. They are swayed by rhetoric and the charm of a master crowd puller. Raila is a charismatic person, but this charisma will hardly translate to an improved Kenya. I am curious though as to whether a Raila presidency would leave us smiling or smarting after five years.
